AN EARLY INFLUENCE

They called me “Lil Charlie,” meaning I was just like my investigative journalist father. At the time, I didn’t know what that meant, but it was fine by me because to me he was a superhero. An outlaw ink slinger and his daughter, hanging out with mass murderers, dodging errant lawmen, and me mixing his drinks at 100-plus-mph down old swamp roads - we made a hell of a duo.

GETTING MY FEET WET

After a childhood full of his tutelage, by the time I was 21 I decided to pursue a full-time career freelancing. While a student at UGA, my work was featured weekly in The Athens Banner-Herald as a “special correspondent” covering various topics, such as art and theater reviews, as well as controversial front-page features for the weekend editions.

GOING PRO

Like any ambitious writer, I wanted to go national and studied the markets, breaking into an international market when I got a gig with Black Belt Magazine covering UFC V - when it was far too controversial to believe it would survive.

 MY NICHE

Covering MMA fights became an inadvertent niche for me and wound up shaping my career and character in ways unexpected and serendipitous. International travel resulted from connections in the mixed martial arts genre, whetting my appetite for more of the same.

INTERNATIONAL ASSIGNMENTS

Covering character profiles, and adventure races, like the Eco-Challenge, Marathon Des Sables, 4 Desert Series, Jordan Cup and Subaru Primal Quest kept me globetrotting, while I built strong editorial bonds with Penthouse, Razor and other men's lifestyle and travel publications.

NEWS WORK

After freelancing for 15 years, I took a position as editor for two local newspapers, and a widely read online news site. Collaborating with local officials, I covered County and City news, as well as human interest stories of area luminaries and persons of interest. My efforts increased readership locally and nationally for all outlets.

NOVELS

Always a creative writer, I have written a novel, Underbelly. Currently, I am working on a novel, Blood Will Tell, and a novella, What Willie Did.

ADAPT OR DIE

As the publishing world changes, almost daily, I am doing what I was born to do – just write, always write.
